Hi gang. You may have surfed in to see something different today: our name! Yes, I have decided to change the name of this site to Moonletters. One reason is that while we are focused on Second Life right now, that may not always be the case. In the future we may include other virtual worlds.

moonWhen I first got online I used something called CompuServe. I had a 2400 baud modem, and after some screetching from a dialup phone line I could connect to a text based environment and pay a fortune by the hour to enter chat rooms to talk to other people.

Back then people who had Compuserve could not talk to people who got online via another service, America Online. You could only interact with those who had CompuServe too. This was the early 1990s, but soon after this something called the world wide web exploded and linked everyone together. I believe this may happen to virtual worlds, and when it does I want this site to be ready, and not stuck with a name limiting us to Second Life. (Of course that day hasn’t come yet, so for now we are still very dedicated to Second Life. I’ve just not found any other virtual world I like better.)

Why the name Moonletters? Well, the name itself evokes the image of another world (which we are dealing with). I didn’t think of the name myself, but it came to me in a bizarre way. You may not believe this story, but it’s true. I had fallen asleep and began to have an extraordinary dream. I saw the moon hanging before me and these exotic letters, perhaps you might call them runes, appeared in midair in front of me. They seemed to be cut directly out of the moon itself. In the dream I exclaimed “Moonletters!” and then heard (still in the dream) a famous line from the first men to travel to the moon “The Eagle has landed.”

Instantly I woke up, went downstairs and clicked the television on. Right at that exact moment the words came out of the tv “The Eagle has landed.” I was awake now and watching a replay of the moon landing! Honest guys, the tv was off so I wasn’t hearing this as I dreamed it. No idea if it was just a funny coincidence or what. (I wasn’t dropping acid either!) I just know the word “Moonletters” stuck with me after that, and I went on to name my magazine that. So in honor of that freaky incident I name this site Moonletters as well.

Update your bookmarks to http://www.moonletters.com. I will be dissolving the slFIX group inworld, and creating a new one. I may ditch the soldier offering a nice cup of slFIX as our mascot, though he does have special place in my heart. I still laugh every time I see him!

I’ll be sending an announcement to the slfix group inworld as well, explaining the name change. Those who do not read this site, and who do not read my announcement inworld, yet send an IM asking “Why was I evicted from your group?” will be flogged.

Can I be flogged anyway? You might consider it after I have my way with the bad jokes that will now stream forth!

As staff, am I going to be considered a Moonie?

Will what I’m doing for the blog be considered Mooning?

No Pay, you won’t be a moonie. You will be a lunatic. Get it LUNAtic? (And you thought your jokes bad.)

Yes, you can be flogged anyway. ;)
