I was writing an article entitled “What Second Life Profiles Say, And What They Really Mean.” It was not published yet, but was invisible as a draft here in wordpress while I was still working on it. When I’m writing I usually delete half the stuff I scrawl into my drafts, editing it to make my insanity semi-fit for reader consumption. Some stuff I trash entirely, while other articles, when finished, do not even resemble what they were like when they started.
Paypabak Writer, Chief Staff Writer of Moonletters with some recently added editor powers, was naughty today. She took a peek into my unpublished draft of an article, reading the beginning of my scrawlings that were not yet fit to be read. She IM’d me about it.
What was the fuss about? My article was meant to be a humor piece. Pay thought it was funny in some parts, but also thought I was coming off hard on something that was a sensitive issue to some, especially after the transgender day of remembrance in Second Life.
You guessed it, I was poking fun at men who use female avatars.
Just to be clear, some of my best friends in Second Life are men who use female avatars. I might make good natured fun (Toastie and I have made a game of guessing which avatars are really “geezers in a skirt”) but it’s never to come down on anyone. We just think it’s funny sometimes to see Pamela Anderson-type avatars talking about Linux. Hey, I use male alts now and then, and you’re perfectly welcome to make fun of them. I got enough of them to start a rock band!
I must be truthful. I don’t mind riling people up sometimes. However, on serious things, and when it comes to the feelings of those I care about, as well as those who have received enough flak as it is lately, I do care. Pay was already a bit shaken after having gone to the transgender day of remembrance, and so was my friend Madame, who sent me a notecard about the event.
Taking that into consideration I’m going to refrain from the jokes at this time. The last thing I’d want is to hurt someone. This does not mean I’m never going to laugh if I see a guy using an avatar with exaggerated breasts and an enormous bottom, it just means I am going to be nice and spare you from my bad jokes for now.
All that aside . . . . Paypabak Writer was full of mischief peeking at my draft. I mean, no one should be subjected to my unedited writing, not even when they’re being naughty. I gave Pay a sisterly hug to show I didn’t meant to hurt her feelings by my scrawlings. Later, she apologized too. “Sorry for looking at your private parts,” she said.
Note: That is Paypabak Writer in the snapshot holding the censored sign. I think I need to get me one of those signs.

LOL, I’ll know better to take you seriously when you ask if you could quote me! The notecard from Madame said it all about the Memorial … it really is disturbing that there are people in this world who would main or kill someone who is just a little different, who is struggling with that difference and doesn’t need a hateful society making things worse. It’s one of the most amazing things about SL that the ideal is tolerance to the highest degree.
BTW: “sisterly hug”??!! Oh, I get it! *Wink!*
I’ll see if that Censored sign is copy/trans or at least get a LM for where I got it for you.
