A HUD for Plurkers!

Preface: For those not in the Know, Plurk is Twitter taken a step further. To those not familiar with Twitter, just have some milk and cookies on me, and skip to the next article! Twitter lists postings from your friends to you down the page vertically. These are usually called Tweets. Plurk lists Tweets horizontally, so you basically can sort through each friend’s Tweet, click on it and get a drop down listing of replies and a text box for posting your own reply. It’s very addictive.
Our story in progress: I’d spent a fair amount of time wondering if I was going to find something to write about for my usual Tuesday post. I had a number of little items for another “Paypourri” when I overheard someone remark about their PlurkHUD. My ears went Neko-sized and my mouth was agape! Did she have a Landmark? No, but the name of the inventor, Thraxis Epsilon, yielded a profile with two Picks with store loca
tions. Of course, my second visit was to his main store and there in very plain sight was the vendor for the $250L HUD.
This is a very simple device (please note the pics of menu displays and the HUD button) You wear the HUD in the default top middle attachment point. It’s pretty much a red button that reads PLURK. You edit a config file that looks like this:
# Enter your username and password for Plurk below, no spaces between = and username or password
uname=
password=
# Enter the channel you wish to post text on.
channel=100
Follow those instructions and as long as SL allows you to save it–I had some trouble, believe it or not–you will then click on the Plurk button to initiate a Plurk, post a Slurl, post Slurl with a note of a limited number of characters, check your current Karma level, or open the Plurk Website in your browser (either in-world or your default browser of choice). I did exactly that and you can see results in my screen shot below.
I like the idea of plurking from SL!

I should be getting the milk and cookies I think. Am I the only one not tweeting? I’m on facebook and I just thought the status updates we post there was probably the same type thing as those tweets on Twitter–so not sure if I need it both. Am I really missing out? Is Plurk better than Twitter, and does one need to be familiar with Twitter before getting into Plurking?
I like that your ears go neko size when someone mentions a new HUD, or rather a PlurkHUD in particular. That was some good imagery!
There’s a great community of SL Plurkers, Shauna, that I strongly recommend forgoing Twitter and joining Plurk, just to make the contacts. I plug Moonletters and get great information from other Plurkers, who also point out Web posts and SLurls on their timelines. Don’t get too hung up on the Karma and Fan aspects … just use it for networking and you’ll be glad you did.
