I just spent some time standing around at a booth explaining products to people passing by in a tech fare. Maybe you’ve done something similar or attended something like this in your first life, but I was doing it in my second life! And what an interesting new dimension to Second Life this exhibition presented to me! People are working in virtual libraries, expanding the services they provide in first life to the citizens of Second Life! What is so impressive is how big their presence is! The following is taken from their most recent information notecard:

fare_002Alliance Virtual Library (formerly known as Second Life Library 2.0) is part of the Info Island Archipelago.  Operated by the Alliance Library System in Illinois, the archipelago is made up of many islands that relate to libraries and education. For more information visit their blog InfoIsland.org.

On Info Island two main library buildings AVL east and AVL west that hold our collections.    There are genre and special resource areas such as Mystery Manor and Sci Fiction, Peace Park, and the Genealogy Resource Center.  Info Island is the home of ICT Library also.

Of particular interest to librarians is the library resource area located on the top floor of the Alliance Virtual Library West.

Info Island International: Helpful Information on SL in many languages, landmarks for corresponding SL locations for those languages, places to meet and chat!

Infotainment: A combination of information and entertainment this island contains museums, a theater, and our own jazz club, the Jazz Cat!

Imagination Island: Rachelville comprises half this island with resources for children’s literature, beautiful gardens and a maze.

Vendor Villiage (coming soon) completes Imagination island with shops for library vendors to display products and innovations.

Illumination Island: A lovely sim dedicated to in-world books and audio books.  Enjoy the beauty of the area while browsing the classics!

Health Info Island: Medical Library, consumer health, and accessibility resources.

Cybrary City: InfoIsland’s community of individual libraries.

Cybrary City 2: The expanded library community.

Talis Cybrary Island and Cybrary Square, and EduIsland , EduIsland 2, Eduisland 3, EduIsland 4, and EduIsland 5
Educator’s community.

Renaissance Island

Only Yesterday!  Is a sim dedicated to the depression era in the US.

Land of Lincoln

Investing InfoIsland: Learn about smart investing in a relaxing and fun atmosphere.  Trails and a road course, picnic area, and more!

Bradburyville – A Ray Bradbury-themed sim.  Come learn about the man and his works!  Experience a walk in Farenheit 451 book, and visit the carnival from Something Wicked This Way Comes, there will be book discussions at the Ray Bradbury Theater and there are exhibits at the Ray Bradbury Museum to explore.

I counted 55 islands in all. The Librarians of Second Life group comprises 1229 members. In addition, I saw 21 groups with Librarian in the title. I noticed on that map view that universities such as San Jose State University and Stanford have islands as well as the Cleveland Public Library and the American Library Association. I’d say this represents a significant departure from the “game” of Second Life!
